Packing Small Items
When packing small items, try to completely fill the boxes and use newspaper or towels to fill in any empty
space in the box. Completely filled boxes with extra packing will both better protect the contents and help
prevent the boxes from caving in and being crushed when stacked.
Find the Extra Space
Find that extra space is items such as refrigerators, freezers, and washers and dryers. Remember that when
packed properly these spaces can be used to store and protect small items.
Extra Care When Packing
By taking a little extra time and care when packing your items, you can save yourself a lot of aggrevation
down the line. Pack heavy items in small boxes and label each box so you can find what you need, when you
need it.
Storage Layout
When moving things into your unit, spend a few minutes thinking about the arrangement of your items within the
unit. A few things to consider:
- Leave aisles when possible so that you can get in and around your stuff
- Leave space at the back of the unit to access the hardest to reach items
- Put frequently needed items near the front
Break Down Larger Items
Whenever possible, break down any items that pose a wasted space problem. Items such as tables and desks can
often be broken down so that the table top can be stored on end.
Fragile Items
Use furniture drawers to protect fragile items. The furniture will provide a safer place that in a box and you
can simply transfer clothing from the drawers into bags or boxes since they need much less protection.
Metal Objects
Metal items like bikes, lawn mowers, and tools should be wiped with a rag containing machine oil to reduce the
possibility of rust.
Engine-Powered Tools
Drain any gasoline or other fluids from items such as lawn mowers, weed wackers, chain saws, etc., before
storage. This will eliminate the possibility of personal danger and damage to your equipment.
Outdoor Furniture
Wrap outdoor furniture, cushions, and umbrellas in plastic to keep them from both spreading and collecting dirt.
Mattress Sets
Stand mattresses and box-frames on end and stack on plastic or a pallet to protect against moisture.
Sofas
Sofas should be stood on end and stored on pallets or a plastic sheet to protect against moisture.
Take Advantage of Flat Space
Use dressers, night stands, hutches, and any tables that could not be disassembled to stack and store boxes and
other items. Use blankets, towels, or other items to protect the furniture surfaces.
Dishes & Glassware
Glassware, dishes, and other breakable kitchenware should packed in boxes with extra packing at the top and
bottom. Each item in the box should be individually wrapped for maximum protection against breakage. Nest
cups and bowls and stand plates on end.
Books & Magazines
Pack books and magazines flat in boxes stacked on a pallet to protect against moisture from humidity.
Mirrors, Pictures
Use extra layers of packing/wrapping for mirrors and pictures and store on edge.
Protect Furniture
When storing wood furniture, use skids or a pallet to raise the furniture off the floor. This will help prevent
possible moisture damage. When possible, treat wood furniture with a good stain or water sealer before storing.
Hazardous Materials
Please do not store any hazardous materials such as paints, stains, or other chemicals.
